Tree Planting Advice
Trees make our yards look great, but they do much more than that! They are essential to our well-being and play an important role in climate change. Just a bit of planning on your part will help you to plant trees properly so that they can survive and thrive. Let’s look at some tree planting advice that can help you.
- Inspect where you plant to plant the tree. Determine the type of soil if you can, because this can help you to decide the best kind of tree to plant there.
- It’s always best to choose a native tree species if you want to see the tree the best results. You can plant most trees in the spring as soon as the there is no more frost, otherwise you can plant in the autumn once the leaves have all fallen off.
- Before you plant your tree think about where is best. Where will it have adequate room to grow? The size it is today won’t be the size it is in the future. Consider things like nearby buildings, driveways, power lines, etc.
- When you buy your trees, they will come either as a seedling with roots that are exposed or as a more mature tree with soil surrounding the roots. Never let a seedling dry out because they will die and handle all seedlings with care. Avoid extreme temperature changes. If your seedling came in a sack, don’t open it until just before you are ready to plant.
- Try to place the seedling as upright as you can, even when you are planting on a slope.
- Don’t plant near rocks, stumps or water holes.
- Do not leave the roots exposed to the air as they can actually die in just a few minutes.
- Make sure you remove all the packing material before you plant.
