Pruning Old & Neglected Shrubs
As observers of nature and the environment around us, we truly tend to forget about the importance of upkeep related to shrubs and trees. They can’t and they don’t naturally maintain themselves.
Many of these older shrubs have grown in wild, crossed ways and may require an entirely different level of care in order to straighten things out. In the industry, we call this “renewal pruning” or “renovation pruning.”
We start by removing and trimming away all of the old stems that grow from the base while leaving the new flower-producing stems to sprout properly. “Hard Pruning” may be needed for completely neglected shrubs. For our customers, during winter dormancy we use loppers and a pruning saw to cut away old stems to within an inch of the soil.
Though they may not appear to look as beautiful during the winter months due to the necessary pruning, coming spring growth time, the shrubs will quickly begin producing from the base and you’ll have beautiful plants in no time.
