How to Remove a Tree Part 2
Now that you’re aware of the hazards of tree removal and put together a comprehensive plan to remove it safely, you can begin.
Since we never advise larger tree removal for anyone except a licensed company, our tool of choice will be a small handsaw. Remember not to rush either, removing any size tree is an “all day” effort and takes time as well as patience.
1) Undercutting the tree. You’re going to want to make a 90 degree v-shaped cut into the side of the tree. This undercut should be about one-fourth of the tree’s diameter in depth.
2) Backcutting the tree. This cut is made 2 inches higher than the hinge part of the undercut on the opposite side of the tree. This cut also works to release stress on the back of your tree finally allowing it to fall properly. Never ever make the backcut lower than the undercut because you could lose complete control of where the tree will fall.
3) Tree Fall. Once the tree begins to tip over, please don’t just stand there and marvel at it collapsing. Get out of the way and fast. At this point, you should have already had your two escape routes planned and ready to go. They should be in action at this moment.
