Harmful Pruning Techniques
There are certain tree pruning techniques that are unbelievingly still used in the USA. As tree care professionals that continuously follow industry trends and follow safety advice, we are baffled as to why a practice which kills tree is still in popular use. Two of the most common are known as topping and tipping. Topping is the cutting of the large upper branches of your tree in a bid to reduce the height. Cutting these branches will create weaker limbs along with decaying branches that simply can’t support the structure properly causing the tree to fail at some point in the future.
Anytime a tree company tops a tree, it’s basically killing it hoping the branches won’t grow back. If they don’t grow back, mission accomplished because your tree is now dead and needs to be removed. Tipping is a method of trimming lateral branches between nodes to reduce the crown height. Again this practice simply results in the death of the branches underneath and what’s supporting the tree.
