Protecting Shrubs During Wintertime
During the winter the high intensity snow and hail storms are
capable of bringing great damage to your trees and shrubs. Specifically the
branches on your trees can be broken, and twisted into snapping. Furthermore,
evergreens, junipers, and clump trees are highly susceptible to these weather
patterns. For the most part smaller trees and shrubs can be protected with
carpet, cloth, or nylon materials. However, its important to understand that
these must be removed early in the spring season. If they are not removed the
shrubs risk growth being restricted during times of nutrition. During this time
it’s very healthy to prune the trees and shrubs so that they can appreciate
maximum growth, as well as the removal of dead or weak limbs. Trees that have
large limbs or multiple stems should professionally cable by experts.
Through the winter the consistently cold temperatures and weather
patterns will have harsh effects on your trees and shrubs. In particular
freezing followed by thawing of the ground to hurt roots and push them out of
the ground. The best way to combat this issue is to spread a layer of about 5
inches of mulch around your trees and shrubs.
As the warmer weather of spring comes about the rejuvenating excess of
sunlight will help your trees and shrubs to recover from damage observed in the
winter.
