Firewood for the Holiday Season
During the cold months firewood is an excellent source of heat and
can save you greatly on your bills. The best time of year to cut firewood is
during warmer climates like the spring or summer. The most important thing to
know about firewood during the holiday season is how to dry it out properly.
Sometimes this is referred to as seasoning firewood. This is the process of
decreasing the amount of moisture within the firewood to allow for best
conditions while its burning. In most cases firewood should be cut a year in
advance, the vast majority of firewood you buy will be aged for about 7
months.
The basic length for these firewood logs is about 15 inches. Furthermore, these logs should be split again into smaller pieces around 5 inches in width. When you begin stacking firewood,
make sure that your columns are no taller than 4 feet to avoid collapse. As you
are stacking the firewood make sure they are horizontally crossed from layer to
layer so that air can properly penetrate and dry out all of the wood. By using
these methods you can ensure that your firewood will dry itself out much faster
than ordinarily.
